Get up to speed on the terms of your licence
If you are a school in England, Northern Ireland or Scotland you are automatically covered by the Schools Printed Music Licence. Schools in Wales and independent schools can find out whether they are covered here.
The Schools Printed Music Licence means:
+ You can
Make photocopies and scans of printed music, including print music acquired legitimately from digital sources
Use score-writing software programs to arrange printed music
Make notations by hand on copies of printed music
Upload scans of music to a Virtual Learning Environment or similar secure network
+ You or your school must
Own an original of the work you are copying
Copy only 10% of the items in anthologies or large vocal scores
Ensure copies are only made by teachers or other school staff to be used on school premises. This includes peripatetic music teachers, self-employed music teachers and those employed by the local Music Service or Music Education Hub
Ensure the number of copies made is equal to or less than the number of pupils in the class
Only use copies for school purposes. You must not use copies for private activities, such as individual or vocal teaching
Not copy publications specifically excluded from the SPML. These are published on the Excluded Works List.
Provide information about the printed music copied for use by PMLL.
